Chapter-15, Verse 16

Aṣṭāvakra Gita Verse 15.16

It is through your ignorance that all this exists. In reality you alone exist. Apart from you there is no one within or beyond samsara.

This Verse is a profound statement on the nature of existence and the Self. It suggests that all of creation exists only because of our ignorance, and that in reality, only the Self exists. The Verse goes on to say that there is no one else within or beyond samsara, which can be interpreted as a statement on the interconnectedness of all things.

The Ashtavakra Gita is a text belonging to the Advaita Vedanta school of orthodox Indian philosophy, and it shares many similarities with other Vedic texts.

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.4.10) asks similar questions about the nature of existence and the Self.

From where do these beings come into existence? And where do they go after death? Who sees them as one and undivided?

The Katha Upanishad (2.1.11) speaks to the idea of an immutable Self that pervades all things.

Know that to be imperishable by which all this is pervaded. None can cause the destruction of this immutable being.

The Bhagavad Gita (6.29) speaks to the idea of seeing oneself in all things and all things within oneself

A yogi who sees Me in everything and sees everything within Me, knows Me as the highest Reality.
