Ashtavakra Gita Chapter-16: Essence of Self-Realization
Introduction
In this chapter, Ashtavakra, the sage who instructs King Janaka, summarizes the main teachings of the previous chapters and gives some final advice to the seeker of Realization. The outline message of this chapter is that one should renounce all attachment and aversion to worldly objects and activities, and remain in the state of Pure Awareness, which is one's true nature. Ashtavakra says that by forgetting everything else and remembering one's identity as the Supreme Self, one can attain peace and happiness in this life and beyond.
The importance of this chapter is that it condenses the essence of the entire Ashtavakra Gita into a few verses. It also emphasizes the role of Faith and Grace in the process of Self-Realization.
Ashtavakra says that even if one hears or studies many scriptures, one cannot attain Self-Realization without faith in the Guru's words and God's Grace. He also says that even if one is instructed by Lord Shiva or Lord Brahma, one cannot attain self-realization without forgetting everything else and remembering one's true Self.
The connection of this chapter with the remaining book is that it prepares the reader for the final chapter, which is a dialogue between Janaka and Ashtavakra after Janaka has realized his True Self. The 16th chapter also serves as a conclusion to the main themes and topics discussed in the previous chapters, such as Realize, the characteristics of a Realized person, the methods of inquiry and meditation, and the obstacles and pitfalls on the path of Self-Realization.
