Ashtavakra Gita Verse 16.11:
हरो यद्युपदेष्टा ते हरिः कमलजोऽपि वा ।
तथापि न तव स्वास्थ्यं सर्वविस्मरणादृते ॥ ११ ॥
Even if Shiva or Vishnu or the lotus-born Brahma were your instructor; Still, you cannot be established within, without forgetting everything. || 11 ||
- The verse is addressed to a seeker of Self-Realization, who may have a Guru or a teacher to guide him on the spiritual path. The verse says that even if the Guru is one of the supreme deities, such as Shiva, Vishnu, or Brahma, who are considered the creators, preservers, and destroyers of the universe, the seeker cannot attain Self-Realization unless he forgets everything else.
- The word "forgetting" here does not mean losing memory or becoming ignorant. It means transcending the attachment and identification with the body, mind, senses, ego, and the world of names and forms. It means realizing that one's true nature is not limited by any of these phenomena, but is the pure, eternal, and blissful Consciousness that pervades all existence.
- The word "established within" here means abiding in one's own Self, which is the same as Brahman, the Supreme Reality. It means being free from all doubts, fears, desires, and delusions. It means being at peace with oneself and all beings. It means being one with everything and nothing.
