Chapter-17, Verse 17

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 17.17:

न मुक्तो विषयद्वेष्टा न वा विषयलोलुपः ।
असंसक्तमना नित्यं प्राप्ताप्राप्तमुपाश्नुते ॥ १७ ॥

Not averse to the objects of senses, nor attached to them; With an unattached mind, always, he enjoys what is attained and what is not attained. || 17 ||

The Realized person is free from the dualities of likes and dislikes, attraction and repulsion, towards the objects of senses. He does not hate them, nor does he crave for them. He is indifferent to them, as he knows that they are impermanent and illusory.

He has a detached mind, which is not affected by the fluctuations of the senses, the mind, and the intellect. He is always calm, serene, and contented, regardless of the situations and circumstances. He does not depend on anything external for his happiness, as he has Realized his True Nature as the Self.

He enjoys whatever comes to him as a result of his past actions, without being attached to the results. He also accepts whatever does not come to him, without being disappointed or frustrated. He is not elated by success, nor depressed by failure. He is equally at ease in both achievement and non-achievement, as he knows that they are not his real goals.

यदा सर्वे प्रमुच्यन्ते कामा येऽस्य हृदि श्रिताः ।

विषयाः विनिवर्तन्ते निराहारस्य देहिनः ।
