Chapter-17, Verse 9

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 17.9:

शून्या दृष्टिर्वृथा चेष्टा विकलानीन्द्रियाणि च ।
न स्पृहा न विरक्तिर्वा क्षीणसंसारसागरे ॥ ९ ॥

Empty is the vision, vain is the effort, weak are the senses; No attachment, no detachment either, in the dried up ocean of samsara. || 9 ||

The verse describes the state of a liberated person who has Realized the True Nature of the Self as Pure Consciousness, the Witness of everything. Babuji famously called this State, "The Tasteless Condition".

Such a person has no interest or aversion towards the objects of the senses, which are transient and illusory. He does not see them as real or valuable, nor does he try to attain or avoid them. He is indifferent to them, as they do not affect his Inner Peace and Bliss.

He also has no attachment or detachment to the cycle of birth and death, which is called samsara. He knows that he is not bound by it, nor does he need to escape from it. He is free from all desires and fears, as he has transcended them. He sees samsara as a dried up ocean, which has no depth or substance.

He is thus established in his own Self, which is beyond all duality and diversity. He is serene, content, and happy in his own Being. He is not affected by any change or circumstance in the world. He is the embodiment of wisdom and stillness.
