Chapter-18, Verse 95

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 18.95

ज्ञः सचिन्तोऽपि निश्चिन्तः सेन्द्रियोऽपि निरिन्द्रियः।
सबुद्धिरपि निर्बुद्धिः साहङ्कारोऽनहंकृतिः॥९५॥

The wise, even while thinking, remain free from thoughts; though embodied, even while engaging in sensory activities, he remains free from the senses; the enlightened, even while having intellect, remain free from intellectual constructs; the egoless, even while having a sense of self, remain free from self-identification.

This verse from the Ashtavakra Gita encapsulates the essence of spiritual wisdom. It emphasizes the state of transcendence that the enlightened beings attain, where they remain detached from the fluctuations of the mind, senses, intellect, and ego. The wise ones are able to observe their thoughts without becoming entangled or identified with them. Similarly, even while engaging in sensory activities, they maintain a state of detachment and do not allow themselves to be controlled by their senses. The enlightened beings possess intellect, but they are not bound by its constructs. They are free from the limitations of the ego and do not identify themselves with it.

Comparison with three similar verses from Vedic texts for further context:

1. Bhagavad Gita 2.58

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः। इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥५८॥

When one can withdraw the senses from the sense objects as a tortoise withdraws its limbs into the shell, then their wisdom remains steady.

2. Yoga Vashishta 6.1.3

यस्तु विषयान्वस्त्यज्य प्रवृत्तिं नात्यजेत् स्वयम्। विषया वा विषयांश्च निवर्तेत् सह शक्तितः॥

One should neither indulge in nor renounce sensory objects, but instead, withdraw from them along with their tendencies.

3. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 1.2

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः॥२॥

Yoga is the restraint of the modifications of the mind.

These verses from different Vedic texts highlight the importance of detachment from sensory objects and the control of the mind's fluctuations. They emphasize the need to withdraw from the external world and its attractions to attain stability of mind and wisdom. The Ultimate Goal is to transcend the limitations of the senses, intellect, and ego, leading to Self-Realization.
