Chapter-15, Verse 18

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 15.18

एक एव भवाम्भोधावासीदस्ति भविष्यति ।
न ते बन्धोऽस्ति मोक्षो वा कृतकृत्यः सुखं चर ॥ १८ ॥

Only one thing has existed, exists and will exist in the ocean of being. You have no bondage or liberation. Live happily and fulfilled.

This Verse expresses the non-dualistic view that there is only one Reality, which is Brahman, the Supreme Self, and that everything else is an illusion or a projection of the mind. The verse also implies that the concepts of bondage and liberation are relative and dependent on one's identification with the body and the mind. If one realizes that one is not the body or the mind, but the Pure Consciousness that pervades everything, then one is free from all suffering and attachment. The Verse advises one to live happily and fulfilled, without any desire or fear, as one has already attained the ultimate goal of life.

The meaning of this verse can be further explained by comparing it with similar verses from other Vedic texts:

- In the Rig Veda (10.129.2), it is said:
न मृत्युरासीदमृतं न तर्हि न रात्र्या अह्न आसीत्प्रकेतः ।
आनीदवातं स्वधया तदेकं तस्माद्धान्यन्न परः किञ्चनास ॥

There was neither death nor immortality then; no distinguishing sign of night nor of day. That One breathed, windless, by its own impulse; other than that there was nothing beyond.

This verse describes the state of existence before creation, when there was only one Reality, without any duality or differentiation. This Reality is called That One, which is synonymous with Brahman, the Source of everything. This verse also suggests that Brahman is self-existent, self-sufficient and self-luminous, without any need of external support or cause.

- In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (4.4.19), it is said:

हमेवाहं ममैवेदं सर्वं भविष्यति ।
नान्योऽस्ति मम समो नापरो मम समानो न मम प्रियो न मम प्रियतरो न मम प्रियतमो ॥

I alone am myself; I alone shall be everything hereafter. There is none equal to me; there is none superior to me; there is none dear to me; there is none dearer to me; there is none dearest to me.

This Verse expresses the state of Realization of one who has attained the knowledge of Brahman. Such a person identifies oneself with Brahman, and sees everything as one's own Self. Such a person has no sense of duality, comparison, or attachment, as one has transcended all limitations and distinctions.

- In the Bhagavad Gita (18.20), it is said:

सर्वभूतेषु येनैकं भावमव्ययमीक्षते ।
अविभक्तं विभक्तेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि सात्त्विकम् ॥

That knowledge by which one sees the one imperishable Reality in all beings, undivided in the divided, know that knowledge to be sattvic (Pure).

This verse describes the nature of the Highest Knowledge, which is the knowledge of Brahman. Such knowledge enables one to see the unity of all existence, and to recognize the same Reality in all forms and manifestations. Such Knowledge is Pure, as it leads to Realization and Peace.
