Chapter-18, Verse 64

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 18.64

For the pure one who is free from attachment, even when engaged in action, there is no taint. Nor does he depend on any object of desire among all beings. || 64 ||

This verse describes the state of a Realized soul who is unaffected by the results of his actions, whether good or bad. He performs his duties without any attachment or expectation, and remains detached from the world and its objects. He does not depend on anything or anyone for his happiness or fulfillment, and is content with his own Self. He is pure, serene, and free from all bondage.

This verse is similar to some other verses from the Vedic texts, such as:

Bhagavad Gita

But the man who rejoices only in the Self and is satisfied with the Self, and is contented in the Self alone, for him there is no duty to perform.

Kaivalya Upanishad 3

Not by action, nor by progeny, nor by wealth, but by renunciation alone some attained immortality. That which is the Supreme Brahman, hidden in the cave of the Heart, shines forth. This they enter who are self-controlled and free from desires.

Srimad Bhagavatam 1.5.11

He who is without desire, whose mind and senses are under control, and who has renounced all possessions, he alone, doing mere bodily action, incurs no sin.
