Chapter-18, Verse 71

Ashtavakra Gita Verse 18.71

शुद्धस्फुरणरूपस्य दृश्यभावमपश्यतः ।
क्व विधिः क्व च वैराग्यं क्व त्यागः क्व शमोऽपि वा ॥ ७१ ॥

There are no rules, dispassion, renunciation or meditation for one who is Pure Effulgence by Nature: he does not perceive the phenomenal world at all.

The verse implies that the True Nature of the Self is pure receptivity, which means being open to the experience of the Supreme Reality without any attachment or aversion. The Self does not need any external rules, dispassion, renunciation or meditation to attain Realization, because these are all products of the mind that obscure the True Nature. At best they are techniques that help on the way. The Self is beyond all forms and names, and cannot be grasped by any concept or definition. The Self is simply aware of itself as it is, without any interference from the ego or the senses.

Some similar verses from Vedic texts that convey a similar message are:

Rigveda 10.129.1:

"I am not born; I am not dead; I am not old; I am not young; I am not created; I am not destroyed; I am eternal."

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.5:

"That which you see as this body - that is only a name and form. That which you do not see - that is your true Self."

Bhagavad Gita 18.71:

"Even those who only listen to this knowledge with faith and without envy will be liberated from sins and attain the auspicious abodes where the pious dwell."
